GOLD – Welsh Heather Honey

It’s not all about winning competitions, as this particular companyhas managed to change the lives of tens of thousands of people in the developing world with its ideas.

Tropical Forest Products Ltd found its feet 25 years ago, after directors Sarah Roberts and David Wainwright starting importing honey from Africa. The two had been volunteers in Zambia, helping honey-collectors improve their yield, and knew that the honey would be a great hit yn the UK, a naturally organic product with a strong, distinctive taste. Today, a regular flow of honey and beeswax arrives at the Aberystwyth-based company from thousands of village beekeepers in Zambia, Cameroon and Ethiopia.

As well as this, they also protect the Welsh bee-keeping tradition, producing speciality honeys from around a thousand hives throughout the Welsh countryside. And one variety that stands out in particular, thanks to its unique taste, texture and appearance, is the Welsh mountain heather honey, which is harvested from mountains near Wrexham.
