Primrose Organic Centre is situated at the foothills of the Black Mountains, near Hay-on-Wye.
The company started out with a bare field and one apple tree and a rhubarb plant, but has since grown into a flourishing ecological holding. Around £20,000 of organic produce is grown annually from 1.5 acres; a thriving organic fruit and vegetable business which also hosts a large, mature Forest Garden in which can be found almost a hundred varieties of fruit and nut trees.
Primrose Organic Centre has held the Soil Association symbol for 23 years and is a demonstration farm. Produce of high quality and great flavour is grown in a very biodiverse system. The management has been guided by permaculture principles for 15 years and this has created an ecosystem of natural food gardens in which an incredible abundance of food is produced in balance with nature. Sustainability and maintaining a very low carbon footprint are goals.
Organic produce is sold to the local community through Hay-on-Wye market every Thursday from March to December.
Dr Paul Benham, holistic farmer, said, “Produce is sold within 15 miles and minimum fossil fuel is used in both production and distribution. The farm is people-centred and little machinery is used. The high soil fertility ensures that the produce is rich in vitamins and minerals and we sell to a wide range of customers and high class hotels and restaurants that require a high standard and the best flavours”.
