Oaklands Organics
GAME AND POULTRY
GOLD – Organic free-range whole Glamorgan chicken
This particular family business obviously has a special talent in handling and breeding of animals. Winning with their beef last year, Oaklands Organics has now proved that its poultry is also a winner in the taste stakes.
As well as being a home to Welsh Black cows, flocks of Welsh sheep and Tamworth pigs, they also keep chickens. They have a happy and healthy flock of 250 birds. Raising them until 12 weeks old and optimum weight, they then are hand picked and travel a short distance to the abbatoir, situated on the 133 acre Glanmorgan farm. Their chicken contains no additives or preservatives and has been fed a 100% GM-free organic diet.
By respecting the wellbeing of the animal and environment, emphasised at Oakland Farm, they are able to produce food of the highest standard. 95% of their produce is sold to individuals and restaurants within fifty miles of the farm yard and anyone is welcome to join the walks that are organised around the farm to see the animals and to get to know more about their special farming ways.
Their commitment to sustainability is reflected in the fact that Oaklands Farm is off-grid, relying on solar and wind power, backed up by a generator and batteries. Its vehicles run on home-produced bio diesel.
John O’Dwyer, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be winning awards again this year. As a small family business producing meat and poultry from farm to plate, the awards give our customers the confidence to buy.
“As the security of food production becomes a serious issue, it is imperative that consumers support local producers to ensure their survival. We would like to say a big thank you to all our customers for their continued support and encouragement over the past year”.
