Both keen food lovers, it made sense for Tony and Angela Davies to start producing their own food. And owning an Elan Valley hill farm, which has been in the Davies family for five generations, led them to only one sensible option – to produce and sell their superior mutton.
Mutton was a regular delicacy on their menu at home, with their slow-grown traditional Welsh Mountain Sheep proving to be perfect for producing delicious meat. The 1700 acer farm is mostly unfenced moorland, and the sheep are left to graze naturally on the organic pastures. The rich texture and fuller flavour of the mutton makes it versatile, perfect for any roast, casserole, tagine or curry.
Elan Valley Mutton has gone from strength to strength over the past six years, now selling carcasses to butchers, packed meat to delicatessens and farm shops, but their main markets are food fayres and their own website. Tony and Angela have indeed succeeded in combining their livelihood and their hobby, creating a True Taste winning product.
